improvising you.
Knurl, voice, audience participation
Improvising You is a music concert inviting the audience to control sounds and lights using their biological feedback—specifically their brainwaves and heart rate data. Eight participants are wired with sensors and collaborate with each other while visualizing real-time representations of their own physiological signals. By focusing their attention or raising their heart rate, they can influence and control the synchronicity of musical notes, rhythm, and texture, directly shaping the unfolding composition.
Through this shared bio-responsive system, participants experience the tension between individual agency and collective coordination. The work opens a space to reflect on what it means to connect with other humans today—through technology, through the body, and through shared presence. Within this setting, Rafaele Andrade performs a music composition using her self-made instrument (Knurl), interacting with the participants’ data and integrating their biological rhythms into the live sonic environment.
